About West Midlands School Sports League
Our Mission and Values
Our Mission: We aim to bring people together, locally and regionally, in the spirit of sport, to create lifelong memories and connections and encourage healthier lives.
Our core values of Friendship. Well-being and Diversity and our league logo are inspired by the word 'Forward': the motto of Birmingham, the host city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games - and the famous bull which was an enduring image of the Games. We aim to support the legacy of the Games by providing a high-profile platform for children to compete in sport at school-level across the region.
Our 'Why'
Competitive sport has the power to change lives. The coronavirus pandemic had a huge, detrimental impact on children's mental and physical health for for children Research and studies clearly evidence how competitive school sport can impact positively on children's mental health and getting our children physically active has never been more important. By bringing people together through sport, we aim to foster friendships, memories and healthier choices which will impact children in the region for life.
Our Competitions
8 'Local leagues' across the WMCA region are open for school registration now for 2024/25 season. We have leagues available in 3 age categories (KS2, KS3 and KS4) in the following sports:
- Boys football (5-a-side)
- Girls football (5-a-side)
- Netball
- Basketball
Our WMSSL 'Champions Cup' tournaments aim to bring the top two teams in each 'Local League' together, in each sport, to compete for the 'Champions Cup' in knockout matches across the WMCA region. The draws for our 'Champions Cup' knockout matches will be live on our social media, giving the competition unique status as a platform to showcase students' talents.
Why Join WMSSL?
Schools across the region are invited to join our leagues. Joining one of our 'Local Leagues' will give your students access to regular competitive fixtures. Benefits of additional access to competitive sport for your students can include:
- Improved mental health
- Improved physical health
- A greater sense of belonging and achievement which can impact on attendance and behaviour
- Improved social skills and structures
Competitive sports participation can also strengthen schools' evidence base in the Personal Development section of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework.
